Modular House Transport from Latvia to the Netherlands: A Solution That Avoided Waiting for the German Permit

When transporting oversized cargo, the shortest route is not always the fastest. When planning the transport of a modular house from Latvia to the Netherlands, the initial plan was to use the usual overland route through Germany. However, the required oversized transport permit in Germany was delayed, creating a risk of several weeks of waiting.

To avoid postponing the transport, the Diamond Connected team developed an alternative route combining specialised road transport with sea freight. The modular house was transported via Tallinn, Helsinki and Rotterdam, from where the journey continued to its final destination in the Netherlands.

The Challenge: Delays in Obtaining the German Permit

The dimensions of the modular house exceeded standard road transport limits, meaning that a specialised transport platform, detailed route assessment and the coordination of the necessary permits were required.

The original overland route to the Netherlands passed through Germany. However, the permit processing time was extended, and waiting for approval could have delayed the transport by several weeks.

In this situation, there were two options: wait for the permit or develop another route that complied with all applicable legal and technical requirements. The second option was chosen.

The Solution: Combining Road and Sea Transport

The Diamond Connected team redesigned the entire logistics chain and developed an alternative route:

1. The modular house was transported from Latvia to Tallinn using a specialised transport platform.
2. From Tallinn, the transport continued by ferry to Helsinki.
3. From Helsinki, sea freight was arranged to Rotterdam.
4. After arriving in Rotterdam, the modular house continued by road transport to its final destination in the Netherlands.

This route was more complex than direct overland transport. It required coordination of the road transport stages, ferry and vessel schedules, port requirements and the onward transport in the Netherlands. However, it made it possible to avoid an uncertain waiting period in Germany.

Why Was the Alternative Route More Efficient?

For oversized transport, route selection is determined by much more than the distance in kilometres. Several factors must be taken into account, including:

• permit processing times in each country;
• road, bridge and tunnel restrictions;
• the overall height, width, length and weight of the cargo;
• requirements for escort vehicles or police escorts;
• availability of ferries and other sea connections;
• the delivery deadline required by the client.

In this case, the alternative route via Tallinn, Helsinki and Rotterdam made it possible to continue the transport without waiting for the delayed German permit. This reduced the risk of a delay lasting several weeks and allowed the delivery process to remain under control.

Transport Result

The modular house was successfully transported from Latvia to its final destination in the Netherlands.

This project demonstrated that, when circumstances change, it is not always necessary to stop with the originally planned route. By evaluating different combinations of road and sea transport, it is possible to identify a safe and practically feasible alternative.
